Perhaps the last time you changed a diaper was when you were 14 and babysat the 6 month old next door. And maybe you helped bathe your 2 year old nephew, learning the hard way about how well water and little boys urges to urinate work together! Babies haven't changed, but the times have and as new parents you see your own newborn very differently than you did someone else's. Starting out knowing about your newborn, at birth, from head to toe, will provide a sense of understanding and assurance that your baby is a) not made of fine china and b)is much more resilient than we give them credit for!
This 3 hour class, presented in the comfort of your own home, introduces you to the newborn upon delivery, so you will understand what a baby looks like, with bumps and bruises, marks and molding. You will learn why they sound the way they do, why they do silly things like walk at birth (that's a reflex!!) and how they act. You will learn about the discharges and coating, the effect your hormones have even on boy babies, and how the belly button is formed. This class takes a lot of the fear out of getting to know the newborn!
Nothing is forgotten in this class, from talk of peeing and pooping, from circumcisions to witches milk. Information will be given on vaccinating you baby, although the ultimate decision should be determined with guidance from the pediatrician.
You will be given guidance on how to select the right pediatrician and will be given a list of doctors based upon your specific location and needs. We work closely with pediatricians throughout the area and they will take the time for you to interview before making a choice. As with any doctor, whomever you select is not etched in stone and as your needs or those of your child require a rethinking and perhaps a reevaluation, we will gladly work with you in selecting another doctor, no matter the age or reason for switching.
You will learn how to bathe the baby, change a diaper, dress and swaddle and position your baby for sleep (to prevent the risk of SIDS), tummy time and comfort.
