Sharon Jayson, a reporter for USA Today, recently stated that first-time mothers are working longer into their pregnancies and returning to work sooner after their babies are born than in decades past (according to a report from the U.S. Census Bureau.)

In a news piece on the Today Show, on November 15, 2005, it was reported that even former professional women with MBA's who attempt to return to the workforce are rarely, if ever, offered executive and/or comparable positions, let alone salaries comparable to what they were receiving before taking time off to have children. The report stated that:

  • 54% had to change their type of job, or work

  • 59% went back to smaller companies, or lesser positiongs

  • 61% had to change industries

Companies claim they can't afford to rehire such women; that they cannot be responsible for subsidizing their time off from work for child rearing and expect to remain competitive.

A local newspaper from Woodland, CA reported that 70% of employed mothers work full-time, with 1/3 of mothers returning to work within 3 months after giving birth.

And, a reporter at The Seattle Post said that working moms often go to great lengths to keep their children on breast milk after returning to work, as not all workplaces accommodate the needs of breastfeeding employees.

It is because of such reports as these, that new mothers, breastfeeding or not, and new fathers, often need the assistance of an attorney as they deal with such issues detrimental to their continued employment after the birth of their babies. Gentle Nurturing can refer you to lawyers who specialize in these areas and can assist in making the transition more palatable.
