A Postpartum Doula is usually a woman, trained and certified under the guidelines of one of several organizations. A Postpartum Doula provides infant care, family support and mothers the mother. She focuses her attention on caring for the newborn and promotes a smooth transition from pregnancy to "new family" lifestyle changes.

She works with the new parent(s), teaching about the baby's needs and routines, behaviors and patterns. She will maintain the baby's laundry and supplies, run simple baby related errands and prepare light meals for mom. She may help siblings acclimate to their new baby brother or sister. And, depending upon the hours she is working, she may be indispensable in getting baby on the way to developing sleeping and feeding habits. Most Postpartum Doulas have a minimum and maximum number of daily hours they will work but this varies from doula to doula.

Many Postpartum Doulas have received basic breastfeeding training and can provide simple tips or assistance but they recognize when a problem exists that requires additional collaboration from a Lactation Consultant and one of our own Breastfeeding Specialists may be called in to assist.

If you should have special needs, or a special needs baby, or multiple babies, you will be matched with a Postpartum Doula trained to meet your specific requirements.

A Postpartum Doula will make certain you understand the postpartum phase of pregnancy and how hormonal fluctuations can affect your usual ability to handle both usual and stressful situations. She may make recommendations that you seek additional medical support and we have both doctors and therapists who are trained in dealing with postpartum mental health issues.

Most importantly, a Postpartum Doula is non-judgmental, patient and caring and will help to bring you into the new life of parenting.
